‘Without Geography, you’re nowhere’ Jimmy Buffett

At Wellesley Park Primary School, Geography provides children with the opportunity to explore and discover the world around them from their very own classroom. We encourage and create an appreciation of how the world works and of the connections between concepts such as community, cultural diversity and sustainability. It is our intention that the Geography curriculum will be both stimulating and motivating in order to capture the pupil’s curiosity by developing their skills and knowledge of the world as an interesting place.

We use high quality resources and visual representations to allow children to explore the world. Our progression documents clearly outline the learning intentions of each year and ensure the development of knowledge in all our children as they move up through the school. At the start of each new topic, we use knowledge checkers to assess prior knowledge allowing our teachers to consolidate any misconceptions. Cross curricular outcomes are planned for, with strong links between geography, literacy lessons and outdoor learning sessions. The local area is fully utilised to achieve the desired outcomes, with extensive opportunities for learning outside the classroom embedded in practice.

We hope that the opportunities we provide for children to explore the outdoor learning environments, both within the school grounds and local community will ensure they become inquisitive about the world around us. In school, our children will be confident geographers and be able to clearly discuss their learning from past and current topics, as well as explain their next steps. We believe that our children will be able to make cross curricular links and take responsibility for making good moral decisions to conserve and protect our planet.
