“Art is a place for children to learn to trust their ideas, themselves and to explore what is possible” Maryann F. Kohl
The Art and Design curriculum at Wellesley Park intends to provide our pupils with the opportunity to develop and showcase their individuality, interests and creativity through exploring a variety of artistic skills. Our pupils will also explore ideas and meanings through the work of a range of artists and designers and develop an understanding of how these have helped to shape art and design in our societies and cultures.
We follow the Art and Design National Curriculum and at WP, art is taught through three main aspects (painting, drawing and sculpture) and these aspects are taught across each term in key stage one and two. Art is also taught in the EYFS through expressive arts and design. We ensure that our pupils engage in practical lessons with our art resources in order to develop their skills as well as their knowledge.
Our pupils are able to express themselves through the art work they create. They will be able to reflect on the work of artists, looking at the skills they use, which influence their own pieces of artwork. Our pupils will have a good understanding of the key vocabulary used throughout painting, drawing and sculpture. They will then be able to transfer this vocabulary into key stage 3.
